Ball-bearing World Leader
The City of Schweinfurt today is the most significant location for large industries in Northern Bavaria, especially when it comes to ball-bearings. The city employs more people per capita (2015 data) and has the fourth highest gross domestic product per capita in the nation (2014 data). Every day, approximately 46,000 commuters come to work in Schweinfurt from the nearby Mainfranken Regiopolitan Area and the Main/Rhön region. This means that there are more people working in Schweinfurt than there are residents. Schweinfurt is home to the companies “SKF” and “Schaeffler”, the largest and second largest roller bearing manufacturers in the world respectively, as well as “ZF Friedrichshafen”, the second largest automobile parts manufacturer in the world. But Schweinfurt is also well-known for higher education and is working on building an “I-Campus” where up to 3000 international students will be studying STEM subjects.
