Just this industry segment alone employs some 40,000 people, with jobs being added daily.
Health is another core competence. Nationwide, Mainfranken ranks in the top 20 for healthiest regions. Being a hotbed of medical and biomedical research may have something to do with that. There are universities, leading medical technology firms, and the University Hospital in Würzburg. On the other end of the spectrum, there are the salt baths of the Rhön region and their healing properties.
Science depends on finding and utilizing new materials to keep it moving forward. The Fraunhofer Institute for Silicate Research is focused on finding new innovative materials for the future The SKZ Plastic Materials Center is developing new materials for the plastic industry and participates in global progress in that arena. Presently Mainfranken is ranked #5 in Germany for the development of new materials.
Another Mainfranken success story is the fashion industry. International fashion brands represented here include s.Oliver, René Lezard, Drykorn, Minx, Basset and Authentic Style with the largest shipping facility for Young Fashion in Europe.
Last but not least there is the food industry with well-known brands such as Danone, Bionade and Südzucker. The enormous success of the regional franconian wines and prospering wine estates contribute to wealth and high quality of life.
